Roma
Classic Plum Tomato for Sauces, Paste, and High Yields
Tomato ‘Roma’ stands as the gold standard for plum tomatoes, prized by gardeners and chefs alike for its vigorous growth, high yields, and exceptional versatility in the kitchen. Maturing in just 65–75 days from transplant, this determinate variety produces clusters of meaty, egg-shaped red fruits, each averaging 2–3 ounces. Renowned for its mild, balanced flavor and low moisture content, ‘Roma’ is the traditional choice for sauces, pastes, canning, and salsas. Bred for disease resistance and reliability, this variety has been a staple in home gardens and market farms for decades.
‘Roma’ tomatoes excel in culinary applications thanks to their dense, low-seed flesh and mild, slightly sweet taste. The fruits hold their shape well during cooking, making them ideal for thick, rich tomato sauces, slow-cooked dishes, and homemade ketchup. Their uniform size and firm texture also make them perfect for roasting, drying, or freezing. With excellent resistance to common tomato diseases such as Fusarium and Verticillium wilt, ‘Roma’ ensures a dependable harvest even in challenging conditions.
Growing ‘Roma’ is straightforward. Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before your last frost date, then transplant outdoors after danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed. Space plants 24 inches apart in rows 36 inches apart for optimal air circulation and sunlight exposure. Plants reach 24–36 inches tall, with a bushy, compact habit that requires minimal staking. Water consistently, mulch to retain soil moisture, and fertilize with a balanced tomato fertilizer at planting and again at first fruit set. Harvest fruits when fully red and firm for peak flavor and preservation quality.
